‘Jamón’, an animated short by Iria López

‘Jamón’ by Iria López tells the story of a teenager living in a Spanish town who just so happens to be the only pig in a human family. One day, a new neighbour moves in, and young José begins to realise who he really is.

Iria López has a degree in fine art from the University of Vigo (Galicia). Since moving to London, she has completed a degree in Communication Design at the prestigious Central Saint Martins, and then a Masters’ in animation direction at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. Her final project in that course, the short animated film ‘Jamón’, showcases the full range of her talents as a director, illustrator and animator.

‘Jamón’ tells the story of a teenager living in a Spanish town who just so happens to be the only pig in a human family. One day, a new neighbour moves in, and young José begins to realise who he really is.

Using the pig as a metaphor for the individual who feels different and alone in apparently ‘normal’ surroundings, ‘Jamón’ takes us into a parallel, multi-coloured world of screen printed backgrounds, created by Irene Fuga from designs by López.

Lopez’s exquisite freehand illustration, the 2D animation, textures and the chromatic range in the screenprints make this short film an artisan gem in a world dominated by digital animation and 3D effects. Paired with a script that is ironic, verging on tragicomic, ‘Jamón’ has received accolades and prizes wherever it has been presented, not just in Europe but in locations as exotic as Honolulu, Florida and Virginia. We wish ‘Jamón’ the best of luck: after all it is an allegory of Spain’s greatest global ambassador!
